Arthurian Thesis Paper
The three characters, Merlyn, Uther Pendragon, and Sir Kay all played significant roles in helping King Arthur slowly rise to power throughout the Arthurian Legend. The first character Merlyn, a magician, teaches Arthur very important lessons and becomes his advisor when Arthur rises to power. Another character is Uther Pendragon. Uther Pendragon is Arthur’s father and plays an important role in The Sword In The Stone by T.H White. Lastly, Sir Kay, Wart’s brother who makes Wart become his squire which allows Wart to gain authority very quickly.

As Merlyn is about to change Wart into a new animal, Merlyn tells Wart that it will be the last time that he is able to turn him into anything he wants. Merlyn also mentions that the magic for that sort of thing has been used up: “When Kay has been knighted my labours will be over. You will have to go away then, to be his squire in the wide world, and I shall go elsewhere.” (The Once and Future King, White, 183). This shows that Merlyn will soon be parting ways with Wart and Wart will have to become Kay’s squire. Towards the end of book one in the Once and Future King, Kay forgets his sword on tournament day. He then orders his squire, Wart to go get his sword, but finds the inn that they were staying in is locked because everybody has left to watch the tournament: “Good Heavens!” cried Sir Kay. “I have left my sword at home.” (The Once and Future King, White, 202). If Wart were never his squire, he would’ve never pulled the sword out and be crowned king. In addition, the locked inn was a good element in helping Wart pull the sword.
