Using the excerpt from Why Not Me, Ms. Kaling does a fantastic job not only engaging with her audience but connecting with them too. She illustrates how easily the normal person may appear like celebrities like Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds who are deemed attractive in our society but the confidence in which they exude is something that stems from hard work. In this small excerpt from her book Ms. Kaling tells people about her growth as a person and how she was able to come about the confidence that she has now as an adult but along with telling the audience how confident she has become, she shows it in her words, the achievements she has made and the life lessons she has learned. “So that’s what I think whenever I read something like: “How’d …show more content…

Hahaha.” So even though that hurts my feelings, I’m smart enough to realize, Oh, this poor dummy doesn’t understand the way Hollywood works. But, now that Ms. Kaling had time to reflect over her mistake, she is prepared to provide the girl an honest answer to her question. She gives detailed explanations of the things she did to gain the confidence that she has now and through this serious topic she is still able to make jokes, attempting to entertain her audience but also inform them of what it truly takes to become confident. What makes her words appealing is how relatable she is not only as a person but as a woman. She has been through the struggles of what it felt like to be a young girl trying to impress others in hopes of fitting in and that being said she might have seen herself in the young girl who asked her that question and in turn felt it to take it upon herself to tell the true secret to gaining confidence. Though Ms. Kaling does babble a lot in her essay and for some readers they would much rather read a more concise and simple essay and she does make unnecessary comments that weren’t really needed to propel the memoir forward. For example “ It made you wish you had just shushed
