I referred to unit 7’s discussion post where you outlined your essay. So far your research has proven to make for an interesting essay. I’m sorry I did not find a persuasive thesis statement in Unit 8 though, meaning I’m not convinced that there should be a policy change. I know you stated this is a working thesis statement which was not included in unit 8’s post. If you don’t mind, I would like to give some guidance.
One area of the writing process that still needs further development is choosing a topic. I find choosing a topic difficult because depending on what the subject it is, there can be a lot of different topics I could choose. Also, something else I’ve learned from the writing process is that revising and editing are the most important steps in writing an essay. These two steps are important because it helps crisp up and fix any mistakes in the essay.
With this essay I did try new strategies for writing. I came up with a small outline of what I was going to speak about in each paragraph. Previously, I would write the paper from start to finish. I did not think about how I was going to arrange the paper before going into my writing.
I have revised my thesis statement to two sentences, rather than one. This is so that my point can be understood in a more effective way. My thesis statement is as follows. “There should be more stringent screening processes for individuals wanting to own guns in the United States because the current laws and regulations do not require mental health background checks and evaluations. Too many people with mental health issues are slipping through the cracks and obtaining weapons and then using them on innocent people.”
How: I try to write everything all at once, otherwise I lose focus and my train of thought. And then when I’m finished I take a break and let the paper sit, and then come back and reread and make revisions to the paper. I find quite a bit of errors or ideas which aren’t complete or don’t quite make sense, but then I fix them. It is easier for me to do it that way instead of taking long breaks between writing. I also try to find inspiration for my writing depending on what I am writing

You have to have all your thoughts organized and make sure you don’t get off tangent. The hardest part for me is organizing my thoughts and keeping on tangent. It’s extremely hard for me to stay on one point. The easiest part for me for the first writing draft was picking the topic.

I start off well with the introduction then by the third paragraph my mind is blank. Funny thing is I have a lot of ideas that I could type but just can’t express them when it’s time to write.
I then add all the points I want to address in my paper. After regaining my thoughts, I start thinking about my audience and what message I want to send out. After sorting out my ideas and constructing the paper, I compose a thesis statement, which acts fundamentally as the theme sentence of my paper. I then start to form my points and thesis statement into a more structured outline.
The Problem with Student Debt Students have enough trouble trying to get into college because of the cost of tuition. The rise of student debt is increasing and there are many people who are concerned with the rising percentage. Student debt comes from the loans that are being handed out in the wrong way. Student debt is taking a toll on people in their future. Some people believe that if the household income is not where the requirements should be that students should not be able to take out a loan.
Position statement: For college Should I or should I not, that is the decision we all encounter when we finally reach high school. Now, there are many factors that will affect a person’s life. The most important of these factors is whether or not one has a college degree. Through out this essay I will discuss why I believe that it would be advantageous for students to continue their education in college. I believe this because the unemployment rate (proven by FRED) among high school graduates is incredibly much higher than people that have graduated from college.
There are many approaches to writing that, before taking this class, I had never even previously considered using. One such approach is the use of parallel structured sentences. Before the writing prompts in this class, I do not remember ever being taught about parallel structure or how to use it in an essay. Another new approach, that I have learned, is how to write the thesis statement before starting the rest of the paper. Normally when I would write a paper or essay, I would just start writing and see what would come to me.
