Thesis Statement
40 years later to 2008 when on the eve the U.S. Presidential election; a newcomer, Democrat Barack Obama is going against establishment Republican John McCain. MLK’s stature is stronger than ever as he invokes memories of the current Democratic nominee. I intend to prove that the cataclysmic event of the MLK assassination sowed seeds that paved the way for the eventual election of the first African-American President. MLK was assassinated in 1968 nearly 40 years to the day of the 2008 Presidential election.

Analysis

This decade would either be the harbinger of love and progress or the harbinger of hate. At a time when a very unpopular Vietnam War rages on in Southeast Asia, there is a different type of war going on in America. This war consists of protests, boycotts and an overall feeling of rebellion that seems to dominate the climate of the inner cities and the entire country. Violence by the bullet is the preferred method as opposed to vehemence by the ballot. The senseless violence continues as an American President, civil rights leader and soon to be Presidential candidate (and brother of the fallen American President) are all assassinated within a 5 year span. 1968 appears to be a turbulent year in the United States as President Johnson decides not to run for re-election.
