Cultivating respect for the diversity of the people and their cultures plays an important role for a living. Chinua Achebe, the author of Things Fall Apart, implies the importance of respect in the Ibo tribe because it plays a key role in their society. As the European settlers invade the Ibo’s land, there is a question of the balance of respect within the Ibo culture and between the two diverse religions. In Things Fall Apart, Achebe portrays that the Ibo culture values dignity between individuals to prove that respect leads to harmony. The neighbors of each vicinity of the villages value dignity and respect to create a harmonious living within the tribe. Court cases in the Ibo tribe support both sides of the argument and give equal justice to the plaintiff and the defendant. One major court case that stands out surrounds a man, Uzowulu, who constantly beats up his wife. Due to the violence, her brothers take her away from him to their home without returning the dowry. With a simple gesture by an elderly figure, the respectable society moves from tumult to pacification, displaying the immense respect the villages have to their leaders. Achievements are a respectable quality and titles are valued because they resemble the amount of contribution one has given to the community, and therefore tends to be well-respected. Finally, with the deception of European colonization, conflicts arise due to lack of respect. When there is respect, there was harmony between the civilizations, even when one person influenced conflict into the opposite culture.
