A winner or A hero
“Medic!!!!!!,” yelled the Private as the injured man fell to the ground with a dull thud.
“He’s too far away!!,” another soldier yelled in return, “See what you can do until he can get here!!”
The effects of war, as shown in The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, are different for every person. Not a single person is made the same despite the similarities in backstories. One never knows what he/she will do in a situation until they are faced with that decision. In war, a winner could be called a hero, like Macbeth after he killed MacDonwald, but he, himself might think differently.

Odysseus was faced with the act of getting back to his Penelope and Ithaca after his help in the downfall of Troy. He defied the Gods and Zeus punished him. It took Pallas Athena’s persuasive logic to return Odysseus to Ithaca and his sweet Penelope. Telemachus was also faced with the fact that his mother’s suitors had taken over his home and country waiting for either Odysseus to return or Penelope to pick a suitor. Telemachus went and searched for his father in Sparta and other countries and heard that he would return soon. Both Telemachus and Odysseus had to fight off the suitors to rid their country of it’s vermin. They were faced with adversity that let hidden talents to arise and show which allowed them to be victorious. The children of military parents are faced with adversity everyday. Most children have both of their parents when they come home from school while military children may only have one parent or in certain cases
