It is unsuited for school age group. Besides, this book uses offensive words such as fuck, asshole, nigger and pussy etc. For example, in the book Arnold admits about masturbation “If there were a Professional Masturbator League, I’d get drafted number one and make millions of dollars” (Alexie 26). For this reason, the book is not appropriate for middle schools. For children, they are not capable enough to absorb these kinds of information from the book.
Just because a book that was written many decades ago may have bad words in it, doesn’t mean that it should be withheld from the students. Additionally, the educational value of, The Catcher in the Rye would be totally lost if a book is banned just for containing “explicit” language. Sophomore students are at the age where they are old enough to know what is appropriate and what isn’t and they can read a book that has bad words in it. If a book is banned because of its explicit content, that overshadows the educational content and the moral lessons that the reader would take away from reading this book.
The book was challenged by a middle school in Brentwood, Tennessee in 2006 because the book contains “profanity” and “contains adult themes such as rape and incest.” The complaints also say that the book promotes “racial hatred, racial division, racial separation, and promotes white supremacy.” The people that say that are people that are trying to ‘protect’ other people from knowing and understanding what happened in the past because they believe that if they do know and understand what happened in the past then they will become racist and believe in white supremacy. These kinds of people are like the Holocaust deniers who believe that six million Jews where not murdered despite all of the evidence against that. George Santayana once said “Those who cannot remember the past are bound to repeat it.”
This book should be taught to High School students across the country, and it should not be a banned book. To Kill a Mockingbird teaches students morals, and ethics. The book is still partially accurate to what some people go through even in today’s world, and what the books reads is still a part of history that should not be covered up and tucked away. To Kill a Mockingbird should still be taught in school systems, and should not be a banned book because the novel focuses on a part of history that should not be ignored.
To prove this point, I will be using the book in question, To Kill a Mockingbird, and an article by Pam Louwagie, “After dropping two books with racial slurs, a painful turning of the page in Duluth”. Schools being able to have the right to ban books based on the fact that these books make children of color uncomfortable because of the use of racial slurs is a sound and safe opinion. It brings comfort to anyone who finds the use of racial slurs disgusting. While all this is true, not teaching these controversial books is tiptoeing around the issue of race.
I believe that To Kill a Mockingbird should be kept in schools to give kids an opportunity to be effected by it in some way just like myself. The first time I read the book
