On Thursday, February 23rd at 7 pm I attended the Department of Music Winter Concert that took place in Ogden. I got to experience a variety of selections that were played by both the Concert Band and the Symphonic Winds. I learned how instruments that differ from each other are able to connect in a way to make beautiful music. This musical event connection with humanities would have to do with creation, experience, and skill. All of those factors is something that was needed whether it was with certain civilizations creating architecture, religion, or writing.
At the beginning of the book, in the author’s notes, Krakauer states, “Rape is a much more common crime than most people realize, and women of college age are most frequently the victims.” Most college students are already on edge, especially because of the new environment and people, and introducing them to the possibility of being raped adds a new level of terror for many. Rape can scare anyone and tends to intrude on someone’s piece of mind. [5] Sadly, there is a higher probability that a rape will occur by someone an individual knows; for example, significant others, siblings, friends, and even parents than a complete stranger. Andrew Solomon’s chapter on rape from his book, Far from the Tree: Parents, Children, and the Search for Identity, examined women who are raped and decide raise the children who were the product of this heinous violation. Solomon examines how rape has been perceived by different cultures over time and interviews various women who have first hand experience with rape in order to show the reader show the aftermath of this terrible crime committed against them. Initially, this student imagined rapists as outlaws who crawl out from the shadows to prey upon their victims, however, “80 percent of rapes are committed by someone the victim knows” (Solomon, 2012, p. 481). When I first opened my book to start reading Easter Wings, I was taken of guard by its shape as well as the fact that it was side ways. I did not understand why this poem, reading, was different form all the other ones we had read in the past. However, once I finished reading it became a bit clearer as to why this one was different from all the rest. Easter Wings is a two-stanza poem's built on a back-and-forth between hopelessness and optimism. First comes the disappointment; in the first half of each stanza, Herbert describes the downward spiral of human life.

Can turning points in a single person's life change a whole society? A turning point can be described as a life-changing event that teaches so much about themselves or the world around them. People who endured a life-changing event can respond positively or negatively. In the autobiography “I Never Had It Made”, by Jackie Robinson, the memoir,” Warriors don't cry”, by Melba Pattillo Beals, and the article, by “ The father of Chinese Aviation”, by Rebecca Maskell, each of the individuals faced a turning point. Jackie Robinson, Melba Pattillo Beals, Feng Ru faced life-changing experiences that altered both their lives and their countries.
James Baldwin’s concept of the ‘innocent country’ is how America is in a position that permits discrimination towards people of color, one-hundred years after their emancipation from slavery (Baldwin 10). A permissible discrimination that has allowed people of color to be recognized as something lesser than a human being. Within Baldwin’s essay The Fire Next Time, he writes of a rhetorical concept of innocence, which can be recognized as the racist social norms of America (5). Problematically, this allows the mental perception of a person to commit a hate crime, and believe that their offence is permissible since racism continues to be normalized.
The purpose of “Why, You Reckon?” by Langston Hughes is to accurately display, through the times of that century and human emotion, that despite money, power, and the color of your skin there can still be an unhappiness of the soul. There is evidence in the beginning of the short story of two men’s unhappiness in life the symbol of them being uncontent was their hunger. “Man, ain’t you hongry.... Well, sir, I’m tellin’ you, I was so tired and hongry and cold that night.” (253- 254).
Novelist, Roxane Gay, in her essay “The careless Language of Sexual Violence”, voices her concerns about rape culture and how it is perpetuated in today’s society. She uses anaphora, imagery, and rhetorical questions in order to demonstrate how society “carelessly” (131) normalizes rape. In her essay, Gay uses rhetorical questions and anaphora to further stress her concerns and talk about how writers are gratuitous when talking about rape. She opens her essay using anaphora comparing “crimes” to “atrocities.
A relationship between a father and a son is a sacred bond, one created at birth and strengthened over time. This paternal relationship is core to the value of family, a likewise bond of faith and trust. Such bonds are tested during times of hardship and pain, seen most clearly during times of war. During the events of World War II, and the gruesome events of the Holocaust, this truth was never more true. Through works such as the memoir Night, by survivor Elie Wiesel, and the artistry of the 1997 film Life is Beautiful, directed by Roberto Benigni, these times of hardships are kept alive in common memory.
The speaker of “Let us Continue,” Lyndon Baines Johnson very effectively portrayed his main idea with his intended purpose. The main purpose of this speech is that Johnson believes America should keep moving forward and stay strong to make new advancements in our country. The speaker is very passionate about what he is speaking on and he is motivated to continue the work that John F. Kennedy started. The speaker says, “No words are strong enough to express our determination to continue the forward thrust of America that he began.”
Book Report “Go Tell It on the Mountain” by James Baldwin revolves around the 14th birthday of the protagonist, John Grimes. The novel is divided into five parts, with John's perspective being prominent in the first and final parts. The second, third, and fourth parts are narrated from the points of view of John;s aunt, father, and mother, respectively. John Grimes is expected to follow in his father Gabriel’s footsteps and become a preacher, just like him. The Harlem Community believes that John is destined for his path, and the constant reinforcement of this notion almost convinces John himself.
“Go Tell It on the Mountain” by James Baldwin is a loosely based autobiography about James Baldwin’s life growing up in Harlem. I found this book to be a very interesting read and I feel like I learned a lot more about the African-American culture and their ways of religion. There is a lot going out throughout the novel with many side stories and different perspectives from the different characters. Perhaps the most troubling yet prevalent story line throughout is the struggle between John and his father, Gabriel.
In Tender is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald it becomes clear that liquor and riches can transform an extravagant and beautiful individual into a feeble and hollow curmudgeon. Fitzgerald displayed early talents as a writer, but did not have much success during his lifetime. Unfortunately, this led the brilliant author to die with the belief that he was an immense failure. Nowadays, Fitzgerald is vastly known for his capabilities to vividly describe a setting and elaborately construct beautiful characters. These are great gifts to possess for writing fiction, but Fitzgerald was prosperous chiefly for his ability to intricately expose himself through his fictional works.
