Is the idea of race a construct of human beings? What are your feelings about this?
The film suggests that racism developed to justify discrimination and cruelty, in the name of economic gain; the idea that institutionalized racism is blended with capitalism because rich moneyed people own slaves. I think race was used to distinguish the differences between slaves and their masters. Many prominent people during those times have slaves working for them, yet they were championing human equality.
Since the time of mariners who discovered and conquered other nations, they have enslaved those they captured. Many of these slaves came from African continent. They found it profitable to sell their captives or trade them. Other merchant travelers followed and slavery became an industry with greatest amount of wealth.
Furthermore, slaves were being shipped to other continents with America as one of their biggest customer. Gold and silver were used to buy slaves. Merchants were making enormous amount of profit. Subsequently, discrimination and cruelty gave way to economic gain and prosperity. Lastly, the idea that institutionalized racism is blended with capitalism is probably true during those times. I learned many historical events about how non-whites were treated poorly. European slave traders went to Africa to capture Africans and sell them as commodities in the market. Slavery was a thriving industry that equates to profit.
The voyage is already a tremendous torture to the captured slaves. They were thrown in a crammed compartment with barely inches of space, if any, between them. They really packed the compartments to maximize their profit when they reach England. However, during the trip, many of the slaves died because of hunger and sickness. Those who survived the voyage were weak and frail.
