In eighteenth century term, to “Push” was to start a bout with the small sword, a element which ratifies that Thomas Butler who was of African descent was a fencing expert. Not only was he a master fencer he had attained some degree of renown, at least on a limited scale. When one contemplates that the the first identified reference to a fencing master in the American South, the next being Edward Blackwell, who in seventeen thirty-four published his article on the art of fencing. While not much is known about Thomas Butler, the above paragraphs verify that as early as the 1730s, it wasn’t unmanageable to attain fame and admiration as a black martial artist and instructor in white society.
