Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet was born on December 10, 1787 and died on September 10, 1851. Gallaudet was and still is known as a renowned educator of the deaf community in America. One of his biggest accomplishments was his formation of the first American institution for the education of deaf people in America. He was a cofounder of this school along with Laurent Clerc and Mason Cogswell. The school was formed in Hartford Connecticut on April 15, 1817. It was known as “the American School for the Deaf” (ASD). He was married to a lady named Sophia Fowler (March 20, 1789-May 13, 1877) who happened to be a graduate from his own school. He convinced Clerc to return stateside with him and together they opened ASD of witch Alice Cogswell was one of the first seven students to attend the school upon opening. Gallaudet became the first principle for ASD. After Gallaudet died his son Edward shared the same passions for helping the deaf as his father did. Edward turned Colombia Institution into a college for the deaf community with the support from President Abraham Lincoln. The name of the college was later changed to Gallaudet University in honor of Thomas Gallaudet and his hard work to educate the deaf community. Although Gallaudet is primarily know for establishing ASD and working with the deaf and hard of hearing but he is also know among those of the “insane” community. Caring for the insane started interesting him and in 1838 he became chaplain to the “Retreat for the Insane” in Hartford. From time to time he also volunteered as chaplain of the Hartford county jail. Thomas H. Gallaudet’s contribution to the deaf community and ASL is education.
