Thomas Hobbes was a seventeenth century British philosopher, who believed that the state of nature meant that humans are selfish and we can't do anything about it. Hobbes believed that we need to authority to avoid chaos. For example, police officers, the military, and the courts of law. Meaning we needed all these things to avoid conflict. Hobbes felt that without these laws and rules everyone would do as they feel and conflict would continue to become worse to the point where it could be uncontrollable. Therefore, individuals would have to sacrifice their freedom for security and safety which is called the social contract.

Only because of who I am as person. Yes, I believe we need authority. We need police officers, the military, and the courts of law. Only because there are people in this world who need the sense of punishment to learn a lesson. Yes, there are things I want to do in this world. For example, going faster on the highway or getting stuff without having to pay for it. Meaning if this was an option then everyone would be doing it and it would cause conflict and chaos and no one wants that. Also, there are many people in this world who need to be punished because of their wrong doings, which is when the authority is so important because no one wants someone to get away with harming someone; especially, if it is a family member. Which is why I can agree with Hobbes theory to an extent. However, sometimes conflict is good. It allows us to work out our issues. I mean think about all the laws that have been changed because people had riots, petitions, marches, etc. Sometimes it just takes that one person who wants their voice to be heard to find allies or a group of people with the same beliefs to change the world. I mean look at all the people in the world who have influenced us like Harriett Tubman, Rosa Parks, There are so people who have made life changes in this world because of the people who influenced our life whether it be historical people.
