“But at times I wondered if I had not come a long way only to find that what I really sought was something I left behind,” Thomas Hornbein said. Dr. Hornbein is a very prestigious man with many well-known life accomplishments and even has a published book. His life consists of many obstacles from his early life, career, and many achievements. Dr. Hornbein has lived a long life, now 86, but let’s start where it all began. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri, where he grew up, on November 6, 1930. At the age of 13 he discovered his love for mountain climbing at a camp he went to in Colorado. However, due to where he lived he could not continue mountain climbing there because there were no maintains around. The early years of his career consists of geology in Colorado at the University of Colorado then later premed due to his involvement in mountain rescue activities (AUA). He later returned to college in his hometown in 1952 where he attended medical school at Washington University. While conducting research in college he used himself as a study subject during his first research with polycythemia talked about earlier and was published in the Journal of Applied Physiology.1. Also, earlier in his career he was given a Research Career Development award. Hornbein was invited to be a member of the American Mount Everest expedition in 1963 completing the first ascent of Everest’s West Ridge and making history. After the expedition he wrote a book titled “Everest: The West Ridge” and later got it published. In addition, even at the age of 81 he began to learn how to play the piano.
