Thomas Jefferson was inaugurated as the third President of the United States on March 4, 1801. He had received 73 electoral votes, and had beaten John Adams. However, he had tied with Aaron Burr. So it was down to the House of Representatives to decide what to do. It took them six days and thirty-six votes, but they finally elected Jefferson to be the President of the U.S. The House of Representatives didn't want a tie to be repeated, so in 1804 they decided to adjust how electors voted. The Twelfth Amendment made it so an elector voted separately for a President and Vice-President. Thomas Jefferson was the first president to inaugurated at the White House in Washington D.C.
