Here we stand mourning the loss of a good person, Tomas Jefferson. He died on July 4th, 1826, of unknown causes and was expected. But his health has decreased since 1818, when he visited Warm Springs. He first had bowel problems, then problems with his legs and deafness. Jefferson got married to Martha Skelton and had 6 children. But only two made it to adulthood. He was given 200 slaves by his father and father-in-law, Martha Skelton's father.
He freed 2 of those slaves in his lifetime and freed 5 in his will. Also, half of his slaves were under the age of 18. Jefferson started his career in the College of William and Mary studying law. The first jobs he got into the career were magistrate, county lieutenant, and also he was in the House of Burgesses. Then Jefferson was in the Continental Congress. Thomas helped others create the Declaration of Independence. In 1786, Jefferson left Congress and was voted into the State Legislature. Jefferson also served as a Governor of Virginia in 1779 to 1781.
Then in France, he was a trade commissioner and then Benjamin Franklin's successor as minister.Then in 1790 he accepted the Secretary of State under George Washington. Then in 1798 he tried for presidency against John Adams and lost. Jefferson only lost by three Electoral votes. Jefferson tried again in 1801 against John Adams and was successful. He was also the creator of the Notes on the State of Virginia. In the Notes on the State Of Virginia he states how he feels about slavery, which was that Black people were Inferior to White people.
