I think Paine had an advantage by being born in the colonies, he was the author of the best-selling pamphlet “Common Sense”, and his simple style language made the case for American Independence. Him growing up in England allowed him to notice the issues of the monarchy, he often requested better working conditions

Thomas Paine, born in Thetford, England in 1737, would later in life write a pamphlet that swayed opinions to support independence from England. Before immigrating to America in 1774, Paine worked as an excise man, collecting taxes. Before being fired from his job, in 1772 he published a pamphlet aiding his fellow excise men. After being fired from his job, he declared bankruptcy and, with Benjamin Franklin, immigrated to America. Arriving in Philadelphia in 1774, Paine became a journalist and wrote for Pennsylvania Magazine.

1. The Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson in 1776. The purpose of the declaration was to separate the colonies from Great Britain and to give reason for this severance. The preamble gives the reasons why they must separate themselves and why they cannot tolerate a foreign ruler. Jefferson wrote his first draft of the declaration, and when he showed it to Congress there was an intensive revision process totaling 86 changes, these changes must have been made extremely precisely when you think of the severity of this text.

I believe that Paine had an advantage over Jefferson, because being born poor allowed him to see the world from the common man’s perspective. In Common Sense excerpt chapter 5 it is written in simpler text, therefore easier to read allowing it to reach more people in the colonies. Jefferson on the other hand, was raised by a wealthy family and had a good education. The Declaration of Independence, in Appendix A-2, which he wrote targeted the scholars of the colonies. Jefferson does not mention the slaves in the Declaration, he feared that by doing so could split the young nation, weaken, and divide it.
