The quarter began with an overview of the Louisiana Purchase and a glimpse at the influence Thomas Jefferson had on American nationalism. Students applied their understanding of the time period writing press releases explaining Jefferson's refusal to pursue a third term as president. The War of 1812, the Early American Industrial Revolution, the Monroe Doctrine, and the Missouri Compromise rounded out the major topics of study. Throughout the quarter students examined and discussed historical artifacts including journal entries, paintings, and editorial cartoons. Several class periods were dedicated to the interpretation and creation of editorial cartoons. We also spent time practicing and discussing a variety of note taking and study
