Thomas More was an English lawyer and scholar who is known for his writings that became famous throughout Europe in 1516 and his “Untimely” Death in 1535. He published a book called “Utopia” which was about a society based on reason. He made important contributions throughout his life and the world would certainly not be the same without him.
Thomas More was born on February 7, 1478. He was the oldest son of John More who was lawyer and later judge. His connections and wealth would help his son. Thomas had two brothers and three sisters, unfortunately three of his siblings died within a year of birth. Tragedies like these were common in England at this time. More attended St. Anthony's School, the same place his mother Agnes More went to. St. Anthony's School was considered one of the finest schools at the time. From 1490 to 1492, More served John Morton, the Archbishop of Canterbury and Lord Chancellor of England, as a household servant. Morton is said to have thought that more would be a “marvelous man”. In 1496 he was welcomed to Lincoln’s Inn, one of the four legal societies preparing for admission to the bar. More became an “utter barrister,” a full member of the profession. More managed to keep up with his literary and spiritual interests while practicing law, and he read devotedly from both Holy Scripture and the classics. Although bowing to his father’s decision that he should become a lawyer, More was prepared to be disowned rather than disobey God’s will.
