In today’s politics, Thoreau would be described as a progressive thinker. Historically, someone who agrees with this political viewpoint advocates for reforming society by following a liberal agenda. Thoreau embodies this view because he argues for a change in society which will allow people to become more free than the constraints of society currently support. Today’s politics would define the conservative as someone who wants America to remain exactly where it is, with no change. This is not what Thoreau argues for.
