As I have stated before many people would warn him what not to do but he didn’t like to be told what to do so he would do them anyways because it was what he desired and he was going to live his life. In the article , “Where I Lived and What I Lived For“ by Henry David Thoreau he discusses how he 's only met a few people that are actually living and not just doing the same routine everyday when he says ,”The millions are awake enough for physical labor; but only one in a million to a poetic or divine life. Each generation is unique and has different perceptions, ideas, and people. Thoreau wants us to make the most of what is given to us and put aside all societal expectations. He suggests that you might look around yourself and really take into consideration as to how you are spending your short time you’re given in this life. Much like Chris McCandless, Henry David Thoreau looks around him and finds himself to be displeased. To quote Thoreau, “ I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.” Much like McCandless, Thoreau thought very little of money, jobs and other things of the civilized world. Henry Thoreau concluded that to live, not much is needed.
Thoreau also says “To be awake is to be alive. I have never yet met a man who [is] quite awake. How could I have looked him in the face?”(1919) It shows that people are still asleep or blind with the fact that physical labor is enough but they aren’t awake to realize both physical and mental effort in them. By Thoreau retreating to the woods, he gains freedom and a sense of being alive.

He states that society forces people to live a hurried life full of waste, and this quality of life is the sole reason humans have yet to evolve. In his mind, society has created a race of materialistic individuals, and the more materialistic and complicated their lives become, the more delusional and naive these individuals are of reality. Thoreau, instead, seeks simplicity and solitude and leaves for Walden Pond in the woods to discover what nature has to teach him. He wants to experience the essential facts of life, and learn from it so that he cannot, at the end of his life, say that he hadn’t truly lived.
This highlights how unrealistic it is to live the successful self-reliant life that Thoreau was trying to encourage. In addition, despite how romantic Thoreau’s “solitude” sounds, in reality, living life isolated from society is incredibly lonely. When Christopher McCandless tried to incorporate the value of self-reliance into his life by taking an adventure to Alaska alone, he was left feeling incredibly lonely. At the end of his journey, he realized the flaws of this lifestyle. McCandless writes, “happiness only real when shared” (Penn).
Henry David Thoreau was a philosopher, poet, and a very outspoken person about society. He discusses his opinions on how people should live in his essay “Where I Lived and What I Lived For.” Thoreau's philosophy of simplicity and individualism and self-sufficiency poses many dangers for communities as a whole. Although there are many setbacks, his philosophy is, however, still viable today. Thoreau strongly advocates self-sufficiency and individualism in this essay.

In Walden, written by Henry David Thoreau, the author expresses the immense longing that we, as human beings, need to give up our connection to our ever-growing materialism in order to revert back to self-sufficient happiness. In Walden, the reader is able to infer that Thoreau feels as if we are becoming enslaved by our material possessions, as well as believes that the study of nature should replace and oppose our enslavement, and that we are to “open new channels of thought” by turning our eyes inward and studying ourselves.
