War has detrimental effects on people ranging from soldiers, civilians and politicians. However, soldiers tend to experience most of its effect. These effects can be greatly reflected in a person both physically and spiritually. Even after the war is completed, there are scars on a person that may never disappear, such as injuries or PTSD. In the novel, ‘Three Day Road’ By Joseph Boyden, war greatly impacts the two characters Xavier, and Elijah both spiritually and physically. The difficulties associated with war are endless, and will more likely than not affect those involved with it. To be an efficient hunter, you must have your legs for mobility and stability, without these, there is the chance of spooking your prey causing you to lose what could’ve been your dinner. These conditions only take place because of the war, completely changing his entire life. Lastly, the war negatively affected Xaviers spiritual state as he goes against his cree culture to help his friend. Xavier notices Elijah laying down struggling and in hopes of helping he, “Pushes the needle tip into Elijah’s vein...I flush the medicine into his vein...His eyes are open. He has a slight smile on his lips...I stand up, weak-kneed, and leave” (322-323). Xavier notices what his friend is going through because of the war and decides to take it upon himself to try to help. The only problem is Xavier is using an unorthodox method, which is against cree culture, something he respects. In any culture, going against their beliefs is the one the easiest ways to become less spiritually disconnected, leading Xavier to lose some of his spiritual connection.
