Three Key Points That Stood Out To Me Essay

While reading chapter three, there were three key points that stood out to me. The first one was that now there are people that are rejecting America as a “cultural melting pot” and see American as more of a “cultural salad bowl”. There are many citizens who believe that the salad bowl better represents America, we are each separate pieces of the salad and together we form a great dish. When it comes to multiculturalism and school, we can’t seem to find a balance on what to teach, how much, and when we cross the line of what to teach due to their views. The second key point that stood out to me was that ethnicity can be mistaken for exceptionality. Even though these are distinctively different, when it comes to helping to see if an individual has any exceptionalities, their gender and ethnicity do play a big role. Minorities, and mainly males, are more likely to be classified as having a disability of some sort. The first step is that every single person going into education or already in education should take a class on multicultural education. I believe that everyone has some sort of unannounced biases and take a class on equal opportunity for everyone will help the students and the classroom overall. The next step that I believe should be taken is looking over our traditional assessments and creating them so everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed. Along with this informal assessment should become even more prominent. Recreating our traditional assessments and increasing informal assessments will overall help the school district and the individual students. The last step that I believe should be taken is more class wide peer tutoring. This approach allows students to work together, improve social interactions, and improve on their school work
