World War II was a tragic time for many, as millions and millions of people were slaughtered and many of them being innocent civilians. The civilians were innocent victims of the war as they were not involved in the battles of the war, but many of them were killed and badly injured. There were three main events of World War II which saw many of the civilian casualties. The Holocaust was the most devastating of the three and had the largest impact on civilian lives, with 11 million civilians slain. The atomic bombing on Japan and the London blitz were other extreme events of the war that killed many innocent civilians. America, as a retaliation dropped two atomic bombs on Japan in 1945 on the 6th of August, in the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. A bomb known as the ‘little boy’ with the force of thirteen kilotons was dropped on Hiroshima and completely devastated the city and killed 80,000 people instantly. The ‘fat man’ with a force of twenty-one kilotons was the name of the bomb dropped on Nagasaki killing 40,000 people within seconds of the bomb blowing up. Thousands and thousands more people died and suffered years and months after the bombs were dropped from radiation poisoning. The people on the fringes of the blast didn’t die straight away, but they suffered much more. People looking at the blast would have been permanently blinded from the light, their retinas would have instantly melted away. Being on the fringes of the blast would have also meant you would have received a radiation dosage equivalent to thousands of chest x-rays. From this radiation the victims would later on be very vulnerable to all types of cancer and develop multiple different types at a time.
