“Suspense combines curiosity with fear and pulls them up a Rising Slope” - Mason Cooley. This quote is explaining that suspense is very important in a story, it pulls everything together. George Toudouze’s “ Three Skeleton Key”is about three men who are on a lighthouse. While going on in the story, these man eating rats come. They have to find a way to make it out alive. Sight is a major sense that leads to suspense because, the reader can visualize everything, and have a better understanding of what is going on. Irony creates suspense in the story because, the reader would not have thought that she would have killed him by the way she was saying she loved him. Also, the readers know more than the characters in the story which makes it more interesting. Irony really makes a difference in the story. For example, “Personally, I think it's right here on the premises’” Probably right under our noses’” (Dahl 119). This quote is talking about where the weapon is, when they are eating it. Everything just had to be perfect. At the end it says “impossible that she…” this is trying to infer that she did not kill him. To sum up, irony creates suspense in the story because the reader knows one thing, when the characters think the other. Sight creates suspense in Toudouze’s “Three Skeleton Key”, whereas dramatic irony creates suspense in Dahl’s “Lamb to the Slaughter”. In Toudouze’s story, “Three Skeleton Key” because, the readers could could visualize everything as it happens.
