The rhetorical analysis of the court document “Kinkel vs The State of Oregon”. The document was written to explain the arguments of both sides of the court and to justify the decision made by the court and the judge through facts and rhetorical accounts of events that transpired. The judge clearly uses Ethos, Logos, and Pathos within the analysis which is used to his advantage. There are many audiences involved in the court and trial. There is the defendants and the victim’s family members present.
Pathos refers to a speaker evoking emotions to influence his or her audience. Antony effectively uses pathos when he eulogizes about Caesar. He evokes empathetic emotions in his discourse. In addition, Antony uses pathos when he expresses his own feelings. Antony proclaims, "Bear with me; / My heart is in the coffin there with Caesar, /
This also is based on pathos because it's all about emotion and the tragic event. For example “Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin, know that there is no hope for their recovery.” this appeals to Logos because there wasn't a way to get them back. It shows reasoning on why he said this because if anything went wrong the crowd wouldn't have hope, but would know they knew from the start. This also appeals to pathos due to the fact it controls the audience's emotion.
Pathos control the emotions of an audience and evoke a certain feeling to persuade the crowd in this case. Finally, logos convince an audience using reasoning and logic. Antony expresses a variety of persuasive techniques throughout his entire speech and change the mindset of the commoners using ethos, pathos, and logos. In Marc Antony’s speech, he used to persuasive technique known as ethos.

Rhetorical Appeals The three elements of rhetorical appeals were analyzed in Po Bronson’s article “Learning to Lie,” published February 10, 2008. In the article, Po Bronson uses rhetorical devices to persuade the reader that a reasonable one-third of teens lie to their parents. Bronson discusses about young kids learning to lie and what their causes may be. To better convey his points to the reader, Bronson uses the rhetorical appeals of ethos, pathos, and logos. Ethos is trying to convincing the audience and a persuader by trying to achieve credibility.
In the winter of 1776, during American Revolution, the still young America faced three major dilemmas: their seemingly imminent defeat, the moral debate between the Whigs and the British loyalists, and the panic and confusion of the American public. Ethos has to do with credibility and establishing a good relationship with the audience. This can also be expressed through your tone and confidence of the matter. If someone is more confident through his or her tone, it'll attract the reader to continue reading without questioning the validity of the argument. In my personal statement, I was telling a story that I have told others many times before to a variety of people. My tone remains subtle and informal so that the audience feels like we are having a conversation.

Ethos meaning the speaker is dwelling upon themselves, pathos meaning the speaker is using imagination to create emotion, and logos meaning facts and logic is used by the speaker to persuade the audience. Socrates used logos in a way that helped him exhibit an effective speech to prove which type of knowledge is worth knowing. In spite of this claim, Socrates was truly only showing the court that he really did not know much more than his name.
The use of ethos, pathos, and logos in any type of writing or speaking can create a commanding and arresting effect on the reader/listener.
There are many writers that affect our emotions or that make us think that his or her statements are reasonable, whether they are authors of books, or script writers for a movie or a play. In Morgan Spurlock’s film, Supersize Me, he uses three common rhetorical strategies: ethos, pathos, and logos. He uses all three effectively, however pathos has the greatest effect out of all three rhetorical strategies. Spurlock uses ethos, or ethical appeal, in his film.
In the 1960s the African Americans were freed, but did they really have all the rights they were promised? Racial conflicts were everywhere. Lyndon B. Johnson was current president and was trying to encourage congress to pass a bill called The Voting Rights Act. To influence the vote he gave the speech “We Shall Overcome.” In “We Shall Overcome” President Lyndon Johnson used ethos, pathos, logos, and other rhetorical devices such as allusions, repetition and appeals to authority to persuade congress to pass the act.
These strong pathos appeals and honorific terms in return build his credibility to his audience. This use of pathos to build ethos is quite effective in opening the ears of everyone in the audience.
