Social sciences interest me because of the diversity of topics they cover and the relevance to everyday life. I feel like knowledge of social sciences opens up the world and broadens understanding of what is going on in the world around us. It helps us understand people more on behavioral and psychological level. My interest towards social sciences first sparked in IB English class when we were covering the topic of Language and social relations and later language and gender. We were constantly analyzing different social groups in texts and novels and how they acted towards other social groups. After I finished high school, I started to learn about these topics by myself. I kept reading articles regarding social groups and changes in them, when I came across an article on the New Yorker titled Thresholds Of Violence by Malcom Gladwell. This interest was sparked at a very young age when I started watching tv series such as CSI and Mentalist and reading . I knew it was not realistic so I started to find out about the real investigation procedures. What interests me even more is organized crime. How crime can be used as a business and the social implications that it brings? Also the society’s reaction to social issues interests me and how sociologists suggest we solve these problems. Moving to France and working for Disneyland taught me a lot about independency and responsibility especially since I barely spoke the language. Everyday, I met people from around the world and got introduced to many different cultures. It was interesting to see how people acted in different cultures other than their own and how well they adapted to it.
