The text that I have chosen for this assignment is the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas. There are currently four books in the series, with the fourth one coming out this past september. I have currently only read the first book, Throne of Glass, and half of the second one, Crown of Midnight. The largest theme in this series surrounding change, and the theme I have chosen to focus this reflection on is the rebellious groups vying to unseat the current unjust king. There are four integral places in this series that you need to know to understand the books. There is Erilea, the fantasy world in which the story is set, Ardalan, the current most powerful kingdom in the series, Rithfold, the city within Ardalan where the royal family resides, and Terrasen, the next most powerful kingdom, who could possibly pose a threat to Ardalan. They are both YA books with strong female leads, competing in a competition, and then becoming a part of a rebellion. However, when you go deeper, there are numerous differences between the two books. Throne of Glass is a much heavier read than The Hunger Games, with the story taking an incredibly in depth look at the politics of Erilea, as well as developing the backstories and motives of several characters. Furthermore, in The Hunger Games, the entire series is written in the first person from Katniss’s point of view. Although Katniss is a good narrator, albeit a bit dramatic at times, we only see the rebellion through her eyes. And through her eyes, she groups The Capitol as the bad guys and everyone else as good guys. This narrow-minded view gives what could have been a gripping rebellion a two-dimensional quality. The Throne of Glass series however, has multiple points of view, and shows just how many layers the rebellion
