Another reason that shows that the team is more respected is because they received a ticker tape parade after their victory. To start with, thousands of fans lined up to watch their idols go by on floats. There were 12 foats and all 23 girls were spread out on four of the floats. According to what James Montgomery said, “Abby Wambach rode on one with Governor Andrew Cuomo. The World Cup's most valuable player, Carli Lloyd, rode another with New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio”. In order to get the perfect spot to see their hero as close as possible, they started lining up as early as 3:30am, even though the parade started 11:00am. From 1886 to today there has been 206 parades and it was not until 2015 that a women's team was recognized with one (Smith). The only other women to be accomplished was in 1960. This celebration in New York City, is usually for a New York's sports team, so having one for the USWNT was different. A ticker tape parade takes lots of planning, workers, and lot and lots of money! According to NBC New York, The cost is $2 million total, with $1.5 million coming from the city and $450,000 in private donations. The city continues to raise private funds and hope to further defray public funds.” Finally, the USWNT is being more respected because, at the end of the parade they were given keys to the city. Once all 12 of the floats went through the route all 23 members went to city hall. At city hall each member was introduced by Robin Roberts and were given a key to the city. Speeches were given, “We are the Champions” roared, and of course ticker tape flew down from buildings above.
