“One person’s craziness is another person’s reality (Tim Burton).” Burton’s craziness manages to trickle into his unique directing style. His movies are renowned for being able to be very deep and dark, yet still be appropriate to be watched by children. Through movies like Edward Scissorhands, Charlie in the Chocolate Factory and Alice in Wonderland, Tim Burton portrays his childlike directing style with grim twists. His style is very easy to spot throughout all of his films because he uses his own spin on sound, lighting and camera angles to implement his dark and bizarre style to his movies. Frequently Burton likes to use angelic like choruses singing in his movies. This occurred in Edward Scissorhands, where an eerie chorus plays over the introduction. This helped set the tone for the movie, giving the movie a dark feel right from the beginning. However in movies like Alice in Wonderland, some of the soundtrack used has nobody singing. Instead, an orchestra will play a fast paced symphony in order to show that a character is in peril. This happened when the menacing Bandersnatch was chasing Alice through a dark forest. Sometimes Burton uses emphasized sound to add more detail to his films as well. Like when the kids are let loose into the edible room in Charlie in the Chocolate factory. Each candy makes its own loud, distinct sound and each kid chooses his or her favorite candy. This helps the audience establish deeper connections with the characters. Emphasized sound helped make the film more uncanny as well. When Augustus Gloop got sucked up into the chocolate tube it appeared as if the sounds that the tube and chocolate were louder than what the characters heard. That combined with the non-diegetic dramatic music that played over the scene helped the audience experience some of the anguish that Augustus’ mother was feeling.
