Claire Hermeling Typography 02/21/17 History of Times New Roman I researched about a couple of different topics about typography, typographers and general history. Ultimately, I wanted to know more about how the typeface Times New Roman came to be. Times New Roman is one of the most well-known typefaces due to its history, overuse and simple type structure. In 1929 for the Times Newspaper in Great Britain, Times New Roman was created. The Newspaper wanted a new text that would be easy for their readers to read but different from other Newspaper’s typefaces. They hired a typographer, Stanley Morrison, for the job. Therefore, Linotype copied Monotype’s Times New Roman to create Times Roman, which made it available on all Linotype typesetting machines. This increased the availability of Times New Roman typeface. Times New Roman has grown to more formats over the years from typesetting machines to being available on computers such as Apple and Microsoft. Both companies licensed Times New Roman in the 1980s and 1990s. This typeface was now available to millions of people who were using Macintosh or Windows computers. Times New Roman is increasingly popular with Lawyers and has earned the reputation as default typeface for legal documents. The typeface is known as the standard choice for any paper. I know in grade school the requirement seemed to be Times New Roman size twelve for the majority of my assignments. Due to Times New Roman increased availability; the typeface became overused. The structure of Times New Roman is not that unusual in terms of typefaces. It does have a unique look because it was designed for a newspaper.
