All wanting seemingly unattainable things, they came along to meet the Wizard of Oz.
L. Frank Baum uses three main symbols that create an allegory and represents the political circumstances during the late 19th century. Baum did not intentionally do this, but as you read the novel you will see the connections throughout. During the final years of the 1800s, industrial cities, with all the problems brought on by rapid population growth and lack of infrastructure to support the growth, occupied a special place in U.S. history. For all the problems, the cities promoted a special bond between people and laid the foundation for the multiethnic, multicultural society that we cherish today. During the time of the Industrial Revolution many things affected the farmers, factory workers, and William Jennings Bryan.
In the poems “A Barred Owl” by Richard Wilbur and “The History Teacher” by Billy Collins, both poets portray how different explanations to children pan out. Both poems describe the speaker being dishonest to one or multiple students, however, one is more of a little white lie while the other is a lie on a much bigger scale. The first poem utilizes personification and humor to coax a child back to sleep by easing her fears. The second poem applies homonyms and hyperbole to maintain the innocence of a room full of students. Through the use of these different literary techniques, the poets are able to express how the adults provide an explanation for children.
In the movie the Wizard of Oz, based on the book written by L. Frank Baum, one of Dorothy’s companions was the Scarecrow. The Scarecrow wanted to go to Emerald City because he described himself as “brainless” because his head was filled with straw. Little did he know, all along he had the potential to be a complex thinker, he just didn’t realize exactly how intelligent he was. There were three scenes that show how the Scarecrow already have the smarts he greatly desires.
The short story “Pride of Seven” by Robert W. Krepps demonstrates many similarities and differences between En-gerr, a man who must kill a lion, and El Asfar, a lion chief. To begin with, one of the similarities between the two includes their ability to be able to back away from a battle they know they don’t have to fight. En-gerr showed his endowment gift of truism when he called truce with the lion he endured to kill, El Asfar. It was down by the foothills where seven fearless lions roamed the land, and En-gerr stood proudly in front of the beast when he said, “It is peace, chieftain….You are my first lion, and it is peace between us.
As the story continues, the Lion shows more and more courage. For starters, the Cowardly Lion is still afraid of everything, but he still does everything
The musical fantasy film “The Wizard of Oz”, produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, features Toto, The Scarecrow, The Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion. Throughout the film, these characters act as foils to Dorothy, the main character. Toto, The Scarecrow, The Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion reflect on Dorothy as her reminder of home, intelligence, heart, and courage. Toto, Dorothy’s dog, is the only belonging that travels with her on her journey through Oz. Throughout her quest, he keeps her constantly reminded of her home, and the fact that she needs to return to the people she loves.

Cold War Presidents’ Policies of Containment There are often many ways of doing something to get a certain result. For example, if one is traveling to New York they could get there a variety of different ways. They could drive, fly, or take a train. Either way, the desired end result is the same; getting to New York.
From the start of the poem, there is a post-apocalyptic and war-like tone to the writing. Levine gives descriptions of “ burlap sacks, out of bearing butter”, “ acids of rage, the candor of tar”, and “creosote, gasoline, drive shafts, wooden dollies”(Levine, 1-4). These are all characteristics of a society that is unpleasant to live in. The poem suggests that this is a result of the hatred of humans and the easiest way to “feed they lion” and make “they lion grow”(Levine 5).
Some people have courage and some people do not. But courage is something everyone should have. The book To Kill a Mocking Bird shows courage and how it effects people. Courage gives one strength to face their fears in everyday life. A lot of people showed courage in To Kill a Mocking Bird.
