From her numerous accolades to her worldwide recognition, Tina Turner has indisputably been heralded as “The Queen of Rock n’ roll.” Her mesmerizing stage presence, innovative choreography, and extraordinary vocals propelled her towards success in an industry that discriminated against both her race and sex. By breaking boundaries, she paved the way for future African American artists and served as an idol for her generation and an inspiration for the next. Her phenomenal performances not only functions to illustrate her talent, but also her strength as a victim of domestic abuse. The fact that she was able to become even more successful after her recovering from her husband’s relentless abuse provide an example to others with a traumatic past that they can move forward. She serves as an inspiration to not only me but millions of others who suffered from traumatic experiences and continues to influence me to this day. To succeed in the genre Rock N’ Roll was no simple feat for an African American woman during Tina’s era; they not only had to combat both racism and sexism but also attract attention in a white male dominated industry. In a society where African Americans were required to be twice as talented as their Caucasian contemporaries for similar recognition, Tina not only flourished but excelled. She won 11 Grammys, was inducted into the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame, and made over 180 million sales in albums and singles becoming one of the best-selling artist all time.
