Tina Turner Rough Draft Throughout the decades, Tina Turner has captivated listeners worldwide with her endless energy and wild stage moves. Her soul renditions of popular rock anthems such as Proud Mary enthrall audiences of any age. She has lasted years in the music industry as a top charter and her music continues to influence artists such as Beyoncé. Turner Born in Nutbush, Tennessee as Anna Mae Bullock in November of 1939, Tina Turner lived a middle class life with her two parents and sister, Alline. Her parents were two sharecroppers who divorced when Turner was young. The band’s drummer, Gene Washington set a microphone in front of Turner during a break and she began singing You Know I Love You by B.B King which wildly impressed Ike. He was blown away by her voice and Turner soon began performing regularly with the band. The 1960 success A Fool in Love became the band’s first major hit accompanied by Turner as lead voice on the track. In 1961 the band toured with the Rolling Stones, and in 1971 they released their album Workin’ Together. This album reached top 5 on the U.S charts and won the group their first Grammy Award. During Turner’s time in the band, Ike began to physically abuse her. He used fear and intimidation to keep her close, and she was too frightened and cared about Ike too much to leave. According to Turner, he would beat her with anything he could find and she was once forced to perform with a broken jaw, as well as when she was pregnant or ill. He would also force her to have sex with him after he beat her with Turner stating, “He acted as if that was a normal part of a relationship.” After a tumultuous relationship, Turner left Ike in 1976 with only thirty-six cents and a gas station credit
