To Feel Alone Is More Than You’d Think How can someone feel alone when there are people all around? In the book “Of Mice and Men” there is an entire ranch of people that feel lonely or alienated. This book taught me that feeling alone is more than just being alone. Throughout this novela characters like Crooks, Curley’s wife, Candy were all plauged by loneliness for a multitude of reasons. One of the characters that was extremely lonely was Crooks. He was one of the most lonely people in this book. He had lived on that ranch for a good amount of his life and before he was on that ranch he was on his fathers. When on his fathers ranch he “Had two brothers. They was always near me, always there” (Steinbeck 73). He had known what it was like …show more content…

He was a disabled man in the 1930’s so automatically he was pushed out from the crowd. He wasn’t able to do as much work as the rest of the men because he was missing a hand. He was the swamper of the ranch. He was just another worker on the ranch before George and Lennie came along. After the men came to the ranch and had brought up their idea of getting a little patch of land and “Livin of the fatta the land” (Steinbeck). After he found out about this dream he brought up how much money he had saved up because he doesn’t do what most ranch workers do. Which was to spend majority of their money in cathouses and on booze. He had enough money to majorly support this dream. Before this dream he didn’t really have much going for him. Most people say that they don’t give her much sympathy, but she had experienced some things in her past that I give her some sympathy for. For instance when she lived with her mother she wouldn’t let her go to do movies with an actor. She told Lennie “But my ol lady wouldn’ let me. She says because I was on’y fifteen.” (Steinbeck 71 PDF). In addition to that she told Lennie “Nother time I met a guy, an’ he was in pitchers” (Steinbeck 71 PDF). This man told her that he would write back to her when he got back home to hollywood but she never got the letter. She blamed her mother for this and decided that she should do what her mother wanted, which was marry a man and settle down. She crossed paths with Curley at the same party she met the man that took pictures. She decided that he was a good way out of the situation she was in, which was her mother not allowing her to do what she wanted. After marrying Curley she realized that he was not a fantastic guy. She was always cooped up inside of the house while he would go out and work on the ranch with the other men. Because of this she decided that she wold go around and look for him which in turn caused Curley to look for her. Towards the end of “Of Mice and Men” she opens up to Lennie and tells him “I don’ like Curley. He ain’t a nice fella” (Steinbeck 71 PDF)
