One example of Jim Crow etiquette norms in To Kill A Mockingbird is that a black male could not offer his hand or any other part of his body to a white woman. If he did, he would be accused of rape. Tom Robinson is accused of raping Mayella Ewell because Mr.Ewell saw him touch his daughter. Since nobody wants to go around the Ewells and the Ewells do whatever they want, Atticus is fighting for the defendant, but knows that the result will still be the same. Later on in the book, we find out that Mr.Ewell abuses his daughter.

The central idea of To Kill A Mockingbird is Bravery. A quote used in the story that Harper Lee uses to show this central idea is “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view” (30/34). This quote shows how some people can be brave. Many of the characters in the story were brave but the three i'm going to focus on are Atticus, Jem, and Arthur also known as “Boo”. Atticus, the father of Jem and Scout was very brave throughout the story.
Atticus says, “Children are children, but they can spot an evasion quicker than adults, and evasion simply muddles ‘em” (99). Atticus’s different parenting techniques are due to his omniscient knowledge and wisdom of children’s thoughts and actions. This allows him to raise his kids in a way he seems best fit. They are raised almost in a way that mentally prepares them for their future life and surviving life through the time of the trial. In a way to teach them to understand people and be wise themselves.

Have you ever thought of what courage means? Well, courage means the strength in the face of pain and relief. Courage takes place in this book because of all the circumstances and characters during the novel. Physical courage is shown in this book, when Atticus was standing in the middle of the street, facing a rabid dog armed with a shotgun. This is an impressive action to the children, so now Atticus has to show different types of courage to show that he is strong.

To Kill a Mockingbird is a book mainly about the coexistence of good and evil. The book stresses and emphasizes on the exploration of moral nature in humans. There are many themes in this novel including courage, innocence, racism, femininity, etc. However the most prevalent theme in the book is innocence. Not just innocence in itself but the danger and harm evil poses to the innocent.
While school may teach lessons, they are certainly not valuable life lessons. Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird repeatedly shows the ineffectiveness of the education system in a child’s morals. To Kill A Mockingbird takes place in the Great Depression era in Alabama, where education was not the best. Teachers would only seek to teach their classes average, everyday lessons rather than valuable life teachings.
