The only difference between school and life is that in school, people are taught a lesson and then given a test, while in life people are given a test and then are taught a lesson. This is a driving theme in one of the most profound works of American Literature: Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. Scout, a young southern girl, who lives in the discrimination-filled state of Alabama, gains valuable lessons from her day-to-day life. Atticus, Scout 's father, is one of the most influential people to her. She lived by the examples and skills taught by Atticus and also followed the footsteps of Jem, her brother. Jem, who initially thought with a premature mind, became more pragmatic as he grew older. Both Jem and Scout were touched very deeply by the profound racism and prejudice that existed in their town. They were exposed to many harsh realities at a very young age and, most of all, gained perspective from these experiences. One can argue that real life gave more valuable lessons to Jem and Scout than their school education. Through Scout’s educational life, she was deemed as unfit for her classroom since she was more gifted than most. She learned to read and write outside of school, which became more of a burden than an asset.
