Atticus from the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a character with a large list of traits. One that seems to stand out is his willingness to preserve life whenever he can. This is seen in chapter 10 when he shoots the sick dog. It is later emphasized that the dog is dangerous on pg. 128, “…he’s just as dangerous dead as alive”. From here we see that the dog can harm others and Atticus shot it because he feared for the welfare of the townsfolk and his children. Another example is after the dog is shot and Miss Maudie talks about why Atticus doesn’t shoot anymore. “I think he put his gun down when he realized that God had given him an unfair advantage over most living things” (pg. 130).
