Furthermore, the most reoccurring character trait that Atticus portrays is empathy. For instance, Atticus shows Scout how he understands and share the feeling of others when Scout had trouble adapted to a new teacher in Maycomb. Atticus shows empathy towards Radley family because he understands that rumors relating to the Radley family causes the family a great deal of trouble and unwanted attention from curious youngsters such as Jem, Dill, and Scout. An instance in the novel when Atticus showed empathy towards the Radleys is on page 65 “I’m going to tell you something and tell you one time: stop tormenting that man.” Atticus says this quote to Jem when he was trying to get Boo Radley outside. Atticus knows that Arthur Radley is being terribly criticised due to rumors among the town and Atticus shows empathy towards him when telling Jem to stop bothering Boo Radley. This is one instance which proves that Atticus shows character traits of empathy. Additional, Atticus is sympathetic towards the daughter of Bob Ewell whose name is Mayella. An example of Atticus showing empathy to Mayella in the novel is on page 292 and 293 “So if spitting in my face and threatening me saved Mayella Ewell one extra beating, that’s something I’ll gladly take.” Atticus receives a threat and gets spit on by Bob Ewell and he does not do anything back to Bob. A while after this incident Atticus tells his children that he took the insult from Bob Ewell to potentially save Mayella a beating from her father Bob Ewell. Since Atticus reveals Bob Ewell's behavior toward Mayella in the court. Atticus feels sympathy towards Mayella and tries to avoid another incident where her father is beating her up. This proves that empathy is one of the characteristics of Atticus. Lastly, Atticus shows empathy in regard Tom Robinson and his family.
