Aunt Alexandra thinks that Scout needs to “have some feminine influence” (170). Being a typical southerner woman, she's the ideal person for this role. Therefore, she decides to come live with the family for a while.
Aunt Alexandra represents the old-fashioned southern person. She has traditionalist opinions, southern manners and loves to talk. Already at her arrival, she enters the ‘Maycomb Amanuensis Club', introduces herself to the neighbors and invites women to gather to gossip. “Aunt Alexandra fitted into the world of Maycomb like a hand in a glove.” I really liked this quote since it perfectly shows that she adapted herself quickly to the town.

When Scout reveals that she doesn't know who her cousin Lily is, it startles Aunt Alexandra. She finds it's especially important that Scout and Jem are aware of their identity as a Finch as well as the history of their family in Maycomb to make them “be moved and behave accordingly” (178). Aunt Alexandra takes a lot of pride in her family and wants to make sure that they do as well for them not to dirty the Finch family. Hence, she asks Atticus to teach them about it, but he gives up because he personally doesn't give it much importance. Atticus isn’t the typical southern person because he has different values and opinions and he conforms more to the ideas of …show more content…
This irritates Scout and they both start fighting. Atticus separates them and demands that both go to their beds. Scout detects something under her bed and she learns that it's Dill who escaped from his house. I think that Dill is an innocent person from the outside which shows a contrast between the southern life and his. Dill explains to Scout that he ran away because his parents didn't love him or give him any attention and Scout is startled when she hears this. She couldn't imagine the same because her family cares a lot for her, perhaps Aunt Alexandra even too much for her liking. I liked the comparison between both Dill and Scout's relationship with their relatives as it emphasized the way southern families are close to each other as well as its importance for southern people.
Tom Robinson is transferred in prison to protect him since there's a chance a mob will come wanting to kill him. With the tension growing, Aunt Alexandra is becoming worried about what this situation might impose on the family. “She almost said Atticus was disgracin' the family.” (197) I think this shows the life in a southern town. It's extremely important that one's family is positively viewed by other people. Moreover, as soon as someone does something controversial, it affects the way the entire family is
