In “To kill A Mockingbird”, a man named Boo Radley hides in his house for years upon years because of an incident involving him stabbing his father with scissors in the leg. This leads him to being locked away in his home. All the kids and adults in the neighborhood knows about this and spread the word to the people who don’t know. This leads to a massive rumor saying that Boo Radley is dangerous and nobody should go near their house. Towards the beginning of the book though a tree with a big hole is found in front of the radley’s house on the sidewalk. This tree is special because Jem and Scout walk by that tree, all the time, and one day they find gum in the tree. After finding gum in the tree and taking it, day after day more items appear in the hole in the tree. All the items in the tree have a significant, significance to the story. …show more content…
The silvery, slik, tightly wrapped gum was irresistible for Scout so she took the piece of gum and ate it. This piece of gum was the start of an ice breaker between Boo, and Scout, and later on Jem. Scout and Jem at the time didn’t know who or what the gum came from. The next time Jem and Scout find something in the tree it is a piece of gum, and two indian head coins which are really valuable. These two coins are really valuable and somebody must have really treasured them, Boo and Jem keep these coins safe. Then later on Jem and Scout find something in the tree it is a soap sculpture of the two of them. This is what gets them thinking that whoever is putting the items in the tree is watching them and knows how they look like. This is why Jem and Scout think that it is Boo radley who is putting the items in the tree. Another item that Jem and Scout find is a tarnished medal in the tree. This is to be a spelling bee medal Boo had won. This is important because this was probably won during his youth and shows that he actually did good in school and was a little more
