I have always loved to read books. From an early age I began reading all sorts of books from Juny B. Jones, Alice in Wonderland, and Charlotte's Web. These are the books that always had me wanting more. Reading and writing for me when I was younger became my escape and has helped me throughout my academics. I felt that reading was the only way I could be alone or visit a new world. My sister and her five children came to live with me and my parents when I was about seven years of age and I was not used to that at all. Being the last child at home, I was always used to the peaceful, quiet, calm environment, but when they moved in that all changed for me. I made sure to enroll in the advanced placement/honors English classes because I knew that summer reading would be required and that just gave me an excuse to read and get away from things at home. The first reading assignment I was given my freshman year was To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. This book was very special to me not only because it was one of the first “big books” I read but also because of Lee’s central message throughout the book. It was essentially about the moral nature of human beings, meaning to determine whether people are essentially good or essentially evil. Harper Lee answers this in the book by giving innocence to experience through her main characters, Scout and Jem. She shows us their transition from a perspective of child innocence, where we see everyone as good because we have witnessed no evil, to a more adult perspective. This was interesting for me to read because it was reflecting my life at the time. This book was a major touchstone on my life. The main idea in this book was redemption. After merely reading this book I looked at life with a different perspective This book taught me about religion, love, forgiveness, relief, and life. It was one of the best books I have read even to this day and has influenced me to become such a good writer because of all the messages the author got through in just one
