Frequently in life, it is said that the harmony and relationship between positive and negative must coexist in every situation. To Kill A Mockingbird, a novel written by Harper Lee, tells the story of a young girl, Scout, and her brother Jem, as they grow up in a segregated American south. Their critical coming of age lesson can be seen in the children’s experiences with Mrs. Dubose, an angry, insulting woman who is later revealed as a courageous figure that battles her morphine addiction by her own means. In chapter eleven of To Kill A Mockingbird, Jem acts out against Mrs. Dubose in defense of his father and family through destroying her prized, beautiful camellia bushes. As punishment, Jem’s father Atticus condemns Jem to read to Mrs. Dubose
Scout learned to treat everybody equally. Atticus led a great example for Scout by taking Tom Robinsons case; He tried to win just as hard as he would have for a white man. Anytime Scout would ask questions or make comments about other people, Atticus would remind her not to judge others. For example, when Scout asks Atticus if he's a “nigger lover” he responds "I certainly am. I do my best to love everybody....
While Scout likes to fight with other kids at school, her father believes that it plays a negative role in her development and wishes for her to stop. However, when her friends insult her father’s honor, she almost reverts back into her old habits. The section shows conflict between Scout and her friends because of two reasons. First, Atticus (Scout’s father) holds views about society that differ from the other denizens of the town. Atticus “defend[s] a Negro” since he believes that “he could not hold [his] head up in town” if he did not defend the man (Lee 75).
In the first section of the epic Odysseus is freed from the island of Calypso, then washes up on the shores of Phaeacia. Phaeacia is where he begins to tell his stories of his travels. The epic then uses Odysseus’s flashbacks to describe the stories. Odysseus left Troy, and traveled north to Ciconians, where Odysseus and his crew attacked the city. Then the next day Odysseus and his men were attacked back.
Atticus Finch, Scout's father, serves as a moral compass in the novel, teaching his children to see the world from other's perspectives and to treat everyone with respect and dignity. Through his defense of Tom Robinson,
Scout learns from her dad Atticus that it is important to have courage in standing up when it's the right thing to do. Even when scared. One of the first lessons Scout learns about courage is when her father stands up for a colored man. In the Exposition of the story a lesson Scout learns about courage is when Atticus and uncle Jack are talking and Atticus explains to uncle Jack why he takes the Tom Robinson case: “ If I didn't I couldn't hold up my head in own, I couldn't represent this county in legislature, I couldn't even tell you or Jem not to do something again” (Lee 100).
Good morning people of Maycomb County. My name is Clara Tax and it’s my honor to be before you today as a prosecutor in this crucial case. On the 21st of November last year, 19 year old Mayella Ewell said she was raped by a black man by the name of Tom Robinson. She told the people on the jury that she was chucked to the floor, choked, and taken advantage of. But the truth is that Mayella Ewell committed the crime of perjury.
Have you been blamed for something you didn’t do? It doesn’t feel good, especially if you know who did it. In “To Kill a Mockingbird”, by Harper Lee, Tom Robinson, an accused rapist, went through many trials and was still put in jail even though much evidence was shown to prove that he wasn’t guilty. All of this happened because of the color of his skin. In the book Harper Lee, the author portrays innocence and the value of protecting it.
Throughout life we learn many lessons, one of which is that people are not always who they seem to be. This can be both positive and negative. In the book “To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, we see many examples of this. Arthur (Boo) Radley, Tom Robinson and Mayella Ewell are just a few. All three of these characters originally appear one way, but show that they are, in fact, completely different than expected.
To Kill a Mockingbird is a book with several themes, one of which is in the title itself. On page 93, Miss Maudie says, “[Mockingbirds] don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” She is saying that killing a mockingbird is a sin because mockingbirds don’t cause any harm to anyone. The same could be said about several characters in the book, such as Boo Radley, Tom Robinson, and Dolphus Raymond.
