Rock guitarist, singer, and songwriter Jimi Hendrix once said, “I’m the one that's got to die when it’s time for me to die, so let me live my life the way I want to.” Harper Lee’s award-winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird explores the context of the 1930s, during the Great Depression, as two young children, Scout and Jem, are introduced to the racism in Maycomb County that is destroying their community. In chapter 11, Harper Lee emphasizes the conflict, setting, and character as the two children learn to accept people for who they are and that you never know what people are going through. Dubose’s character. Her character can be displayed when Atticus clarifies, “‘She’s dead, son,’ said Atticus. She’s not suffering any more. She was sick for a long time. Son, didn’t you know what her fits were?’ Jem shook his head. ‘ Mrs. Dubose was a ‘morphine addict’” (Lee 127). At first, the children had found her nasty because she had fits, but they were unaware as to the reason for the fits. Shortly after, they soon find out that Mrs. Dubose had fits because she was a morphine addict. Her character can be further developed when Atticus discloses, “‘She said she was going to leave this world beholden to nothing and nobody. Jem, when you’re sick as she was, it’s all right to take anything to make it easier, but it wasn’t all right for her. She said she meant to break herself of it before she died, and that's what she did’” (Lee 127). This further reveals that while on her deathbed, Mrs. Dubose had wanted to beat her morphine addict before her death. Furthermore, she was actually able to beat her addiction before her death, which showed how she had a vast amount of determination and courage.
