In chapter 12, Jem hits the middle school years and he's moody for no reason. Scout asks Atticus what's wrong with Jem and if she can fix it by beating him up, but they say she should leave him alone. Then to add to all of this, Atticus gets called into a special session and is away for two weeks. While Atticus away, Calpurnia doesn't trust Jem and Scout to go to church by themselves, and decides to take them with her to her church. Calpurnia makes sure the kids look clean the night before so no one thinks that she does not care for her children. On Sunday, they go over to the church called the First Purchase African M.E. Mr. Heck Tate knocked on the front door of the Finch house, and some men wanted Atticus to step outside. Scout can hear some things about Tom Robinson, including that Mr. Tate doesn't want to keep Tom in jail the night before the trial starts. Some threats were made, and then Atticus says that he's going to make sure that the truth gets told. Jem shouts that the telephone's ringing, causing the tension to lower. Atticus tells him to answer it, causing the men to leave laughing at Atticus. Sunday comes, and Scout sees some men at church who don't usually attend, including Mr. Heck Tate and Mr. Underwood, the editor of The Maycomb Tribune. In the evening, Atticus comes into the living room with a light bulb and an extension cord. He said that he's going out for a while and won't be back until after the kids are in bed. Then, Atticus takes the car, instead of walking like he usually does, and the kids sneak out to follow him. Finally, they see him in front of the jail when four cars come. Atticus puts down his newspaper he was reading, and Scout thinks that he seems to be expecting them. The kids hide in a nearby doorway and overhear a man telling Atticus to let them through. Atticus tells them to go home. When things begin to get intense, Scout runs out to Atticus, and Atticus tells Jem to take Scout and Dill home. Jem doesn't want to, and Atticus and Jem fight.
