Chapter 16:
• Atticus and Aunt Alexandra were talking about the trial and about black people. Aunt Alexandra stopped him and told him that he shouldn't be talking about black people in front of Calpurnia. Atticus tells her that if they are taking about anything, she can listen.
• Jem declared Mr. Cunningham would have killed Atticus the previous night but Atticus thinks otherwise.
• Tom's trial begins.
• People from all over the country flood the town.

Chapter 17:
• Tom’s trial is still going on and everyone in Maycomb is following it.
• Bob Ewell gets up to the stand and he acts arrogantly so he gets reprimanded by the judge.
• Ewell claims he saw Tom raping his daughter.
• Atticus proved that Bob Ewell is left handed by tricking him into writing his name. This helps the judge in the reaching of a veredict.
• The jury starts to suspect about Bob Ewell.
