Definition of Story Young kids are told stories by their parents to fill their imaginations and help them learn lessons about the world that they have yet to learn on their own. These stories told early on are the foundation of a child's education and hopefully lead to a future love for reading. As they get older and don't need to be read to anymore they choose for themselves the stories they'll read. Some will be sent to a far away land filled with excitement and adventure by a fantasy novel while others might choose a contemporary novel that takes place in the city they live. These stories show the reader the changes the character goes through when aging usually from childhood to adulthood.The coming of age story that never ceases to have readers engaged and delighted is To Kill a Mockingbird. This story is about a young girl nicknamed Scout growing up in Alabama during the great depression. At the beginning of the book, Scout and her brother, Jem are playing games and coming up with plans trying to get Boo Radley, one of their very odd and mysterious neighbors, out of the house. In chapter three, Atticus, Scout’s father tells her “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view…until you climb in his skin and walk around in it (p. 39).” Though when he says this he's not referring to Boo, Scout doesn't fully understand this lesson until the end of the book. In the final chapter, she has a realization and stands on Boo’s porch and says, “Atticus was right…you never really know a man until you stand in his shoes…just standing on the Radley porch is enough (p. 265)”. This symbolizes her growth throughout the book and the moral of not judging until you fully understand someone. Another book that could be considered a coming of age story is Everything Everything.
