The Book is Always Better An immersive story, appealing characters, significant themes. Some may say Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird is a life-changing story. But does the film have the same effect? The story is about two siblings, Jem and Scout Finch, who live in a quiet county known as Maycomb county during the 1930’s. The two siblings encounter many issues in Maycomb and dig into the secrets and problems of the town. The novel is written by Harper Lee and the film adaptation is directed by Robert Mulligan. Dubose, Aunt Alexandra was not in the film at all. Aunt Alexandra is the sister of Atticus Finch who believes he is not raising his children properly. Aunt Alexandra moves in with Jem, Scout, Calpurnia, and Atticus around chapter thirteen and stays with them from then on. Aunt Alexandra is very important when it comes to Scout’s lady life. Calpurnia is still seen as the mother figure for Jem and Scout in the story, she still teaches Scout and helps her become more proper. ‘ “Stay with us Jean Louise” ‘She said. This was a part of her campaign to teach me to be a lady” Yes, Calpurnia does teach Scout to be more kind but Aunt Alexandra helped so much for the short period of time she was there. On top of that, Atticus and Aunt Alexandra have disputes whether to let go of Calpurnia or not. Aunt Alexandra wanted her fired because she moved in but Atticus disagreed. Also, while Aunt Alexandra is living in the Finch Household she reminds Jem and Scout to think like their father, Atticus. Strangely enough , Aunt Alexandra was not a character in the film. Aunt Alexandra could have changed Scout’s personality in the story and she could have changed the daily life in the Finch household. Many people question what the filmmakers were thinking when forgetting such an impactful character like Aunt Alexandra. It is hard to overlook Aunt Alexandra and her contribution to the
