To Kill A Mockingbird was written by Harper Lee in 1960. The Book took place in Maycomb, Alabama during the Great Depression. The ideas represented in To Kill A Mockingbird are the consequences of racism, and prejudice. This book also teaches us not to judge people if you haven’t been in their shoes. In the book To Kill A Mockingbird, there were so many topics being unfolded as it got deeper into the book, but the main one that stood out the most was courage. Courage is doing something even though it might scare you, which is demonstrated by Atticus in To Kill A Mockingbird, and also by Malala Yousafzai in the real world.

When you act in alignment with your values, you tend to be happier and more satisfied—so the courage to stand up for what you believe is worth cultivating” (Brower). This quote explains that building your confidence will make you happier, and feel more fulfilled. So, next time you don’t know if you have enough courage to stand up for what you believe, just do it because in the end, you will be glad you did. Atticus demonstrates courage because he fights for what he believes is right, and stands up for people. Atticus was the main character, and the father of Jem and Scout. He was known for his morals, and strong opinions on justice and equality. This is shown on page 30 when Harper Lee writes, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” (Lee 30). This shows Atticus’s morals, and courage because it takes courage to know that if you really want to understand someone, you have to put their shoes on, and go through what they have gone through. Lee also includes on page 112, “It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.” (Lee 112).
