The theme of courage is evinced in many ways in the novel. His humanity, allows him to put on the world a look full of wisdom, soothed and thoughtful. Atticus will be committed to defend Tom Robinson, the black man accused of raping a young white woman, Mayella Ewell. Although, he knows he will most likely loose at the first trial since he was going to face jury members who had prejudice against African-Americans. He chooses to defend Tom Robinson for a number of reasons he explains, “The main one is, if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn´t represent this county in the legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again…Scout, simply by nature of the work, every lawyer gets at least one case in his lifetime that affects him personally. Courage is one of the great qualities that is missing from more than one person. Courage is defined as a trait that helps overcome fear to cope with danger. ‘. In psychology, we say we cannot do without courage. Courage remains the essential trait for any man who really wants to overcome the trials of life and who wants to go beyond his strength. Courage helps to identify and develop the true intrinsic forces of man to fight the vicissitudes and meanders of life. With courage, even in a state of weakness, one always feels strong; in a state of desperation. An example is when Uncle Jack first talk about the trial he says "Atticus, how bad is this going to be?"
