Journal #4 I am reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and I am on page 304. This book is about a girl named Scout that lives with her brother Jem, her friend Dill, her father Atticus, and her housekeeper Calpurnia. She has many adventures with the boys and learned many great lessons from Atticus. In particular, there is the case of Tom Robinson in which Atticus defends him. The kids observe the trial in the balcony with the colored people. In this journal I will be evaluating and questioning. She wanted a chance to tempt a Negro man, but in the society that she lives in it is frowned upon that Blacks and Whites together. This is a reason that she would be dishonest is in the courthouse. She knows that it socially acceptable but she did it anyway because she was lonely and deprived of friends her age. At the same time she knows this and that was what intrigued her. She want to hug and kiss a grown man so she thought it might as well be a Negro. As of now she does want to admit it herself or the people in the courthouse. Mayella could have lied because if she confessed the truth her father could abuse her for doing it. She lies because her father did not show her the affection that a father should so this lead down a dangerous path. Mayella does do not want to be beaten or abused again so she untruthful towards anyone that hears this story from her. There also could have be a circumstance in which her father told her what to say so that her testimony sounds like her fathers and not like Tom’s. So she pleases her father so that he does not beat or abuse her
